Curlew Calls at Valley View Farm Cottages

A sound we love to here at Valley View Farm is the unique whistling 'Cur-lee' call. This unique bird is on the Near threatened list, We are extremely lucky to have them living in the North York Moors National Park.

The Curlew overwinters on the milder coastal fringes and announces its arrival in the uplands from mid February, faithfully declaring its territory in the same field or patch of moorland as previous years, and seeking out its lifelong partner to breed, nest and hopefully fledge its young.

A Curlew is a wading ground nesting bird, the North York Moors, makes an ideal environment for them to thrive in,  with a mixture of wet moorland and grassland, our silage/hayfields seem to be a favourite spot.

While exploring the peaceful and rural countryside from our doorstep, its a real treat to here these fantastic birds, just to stop and listen to the unique call, really brings us back down to reality and we must do all we can to protect the environment the Curlews thrive in. These birds are an integral part of our cultural heritage.
